Sometimes there are just no words...

Language is often used as an impediment for people not to travel.  It is too bad, as you can miss so much.

In preparing for travel many people take the time to learn a few phrases at least in their destination language.  Being able to ask "Where is the washroom," can be a invaluable.  "How much, is also good to know, as is "Do you have a room for the night?".  Other people buy Berlitz  or Rosetta Stone packages.

Learning a language can be fun.  It can also be a challenge.

No matter how hard you try, there will always be some phrases that just do not make sense.  They do not translate from one language to another.  One of my favourites is 'to window shop' which in French is 'au lèche-vitrine' which literally means 'to lick the windows'.  With a little imagination you can see how the phrase makes sense, but not as a word by word translation.

This article 12 untranslatable words around the world looks at some of these phrases in many languages.

Rather than give up, you should take the moments when you come across words like this as an opportunity to learn little snippet of life in another language, or just chuckle at the image conveyed.
